ABOUT US
OUR HISTORY
Founded in 1965 by George Zerby in Cleveland, Ohio, Strapping and Seals Incorporated (S&S) was created to address the evolving packaging needs of various industries. Steel strapping quickly became a popular packaging solution, particularly among railroad shippers, asphalt shingle manufacturers, construction workers, and textile mill workers, due to its impressive 600lb secure holding power for shipments. This innovative method helped reduce container costs, freight expenses, damage, and theft.

1970
In the 1970s, Dan Kunes recognized the growing demand for strapping and purchased S&S Incorporated. Dan often spent his lunch hours at shipping docks and rail yards, demonstrating the ease and effectiveness of strapping and handheld tools. He believed that “relationships are the bedrock of selling,” and he worked closely with end users, listening to their needs and providing tailored solutions. With the arrival of automation, including carton erectors, case sealers, and stretch wrappers, S&S shifted its focus to these new technologies, which would dominate the business for decades.

1980
In the 1980s, S&S embraced technology with the installation of a fully integrated online computer system, enabling expansion into Toledo, Youngstown, Akron, and Canton. Satellite warehouses were established to ensure 24-hour delivery to customers. Dan also made a significant impact by presenting at the Great Lakes Industrial Show, where he introduced automation innovations and published “The Wrap,” a packaging newsletter to keep customers updated on industry advancements.

1990
The 1990s saw S&S join the Independent Packaging Distributors (IDS) and Afflink, which allowed the company to collaborate with like-minded businesses, share ideas, and pool resources for growth. Bi-annual meetings led to the development of vendor-managed inventory programs, hold-for-release programs for custom inventory, and equipment maintenance programs, ensuring that client needs were met efficiently.

2000
In the 2000s, S&S continued to innovate, securing a patent for the Flower Forwarder, a groundbreaking disposal pallet racking system for one-way shipping. This system revolutionized plant and flower shipping by allowing growers to send products on racks ready for display, eliminating the need for metal carts and the hassle of retrieving them from retailers.

2016
In 2016, S&S Incorporated was acquired by Paul Nared and Gary Krupa from the Kunes family, marking a new chapter in the company’s history. Despite the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, S&S remained an essential service provider, working alongside customers to develop custom solutions during uncertain times and labor shortages.
